Sheffield Media and Exhibition Centre (SMEC) has been named as one of six exemplar centres in England in a government green paper.
The centre, which runs art-house cinema the Showroom and the Workstation business complex, will now receive support from the government to progress as a “hub” for creative businesses in the region.
Ian Wild, chief executive of SMEC, said: “We are very pleased that [the Showroom] has been recognised on a national level and we are now discussing with the Film Council the nature of the investment that has been promised.
“This will not be so much for our film programming but relating to other creative industries. The Festival Centre [the proposed extension in front of the existing cinema] is one of the ways we will be able to build our engagement with these industries.”
He added that recent investment in a new digital infrastructure in the cinema recently has also been important to the Showroom’s progression as have the links it has firmed with local the universities.
